Odili Donald Odita - ‘Black Star’

Odili Donald Odita’s 22 colour screenprint ‘Black Star’, printed by Atelier JI, debuted at this year’s Art Basel and is available now from Cristea Roberts Gallery.

With the summer season at its warmest, the team is taking the time to celebrate our latest projects. Chiefly amongst them is our production of another Odili Donald Odita screenprint - the 22 colour ‘Black Star’ edition, which made its debut at Cristea Roberts Gallery’s booth at Art Basel 2024 in June.

After working on his ‘Firewall’ series last year, we were excited to begin work on another project for Odita and Cristea Roberts Gallery. The ‘Black Star’ prints featured almost double the number of layers and posed an even greater technical challenge for registration.

Editioning Odita’s artworks are always a fantastic time as they allow our printmakers to really show off their skills - Ziqi Xu, the lead printer of the edition, reflected on the project saying:

“Odita’s ‘Black Star’ features 64 triangles that join together at the artwork’s centre, each lining up to create a tidy cross.

Registration was a delicate process. We kept the trapping between the long edges of each triangle to 1 millimetre to ensure the printing technique did not distract from the artwork.

The short edges and acute points of the triangles meet with no overlap or underpin to form the cross at the centre, relying on the accuracy of the printmakers to register all 22 layers with absolute precision and no margin of error.

I’m incredibly proud of the edition and all the work the team did to produce such a technically challenging print.”
