Aung Myint

Mother & Child III in production at Atelier JI, 2023, Published by Connecting Myanmar

Aung Myint (b. 1946, Yangon, Myanmar) has been at the forefront of Myanmar’s art scene for over 40 years. Myint experiments with medium and form to explore themes of cultural identity and personal memory. His practice often questions the place of small collectives within larger communities, both within and beyond the borders of his homeland.

Atelier JI was honoured to produce three ‘Mother and Child’ editions for Connecting Myanmar to support their Scholarship Scheme. The editions were printed on handmade Shan paper sourced by the artist in Myanmar and brought to London especially for the project.

Installations

Aung Myint’s ‘Mother and Child’ I - III was first exhibited at ‘AGAINST THE TIDE: Myanmar Art in the Moment’, presented by Karin Weber Gallery in 2024 at Coningsby Gallery. The exhibition is Karin Weber Gallery’s debut show in London, featuring nine of Myanmar’s leading modern and contemporary artists.

In the Studio

This behind-the-scenes video shows the making of ‘Mother and Child’ I, II, and III, which were printed on a delicate Shan paper hand-crafted by artisans in Myanmar from the bark of the paper mulberry tree. Unable to leave his home country, Myint sourced the paper and entrusted Connecting Myanmar with delivering the paper to the UK, where our Master Printmaker screen printed the edition in our London studio.
