Jules De Balincourt

It Depends on What Direction You Look In (detail), 2022, Published by Migrate Art

Evoking notions of utopia and dystopia, Jules de Balincourt’s paintings investigate public and private spaces and suggest an ever-changing landscape – both physical and psychological. In the paintings for which he first became known, de Balincourt worked from the position of an outsider (the Paris-born artist has lived in the United States since childhood), questioning structures of power and influence, laying bare injustices and hypocrisies while maintaining an amused attachment to the myths through which identity – individual and national – is constructed.

In 2022, Atelier JI had the immense pleasure of producing a 5 layer woodblock print with Migrate Art as part of the Scorched Earth project to raise funds for RefuAid, Refugee Community Kitchen, and The Lotus Flower, all of whom help refugees across the world.

On the 2nd of February 2022, Migrate Art released a new print by Jules de Balincourt to raise funds for RefuAid, Refugee Community Kitchen and The Lotus Flower, who help refugees across the world. The print is based on the original painting 'It Depends on What Direction You Look In' that Jules generously donated to Migrate Art in 2020 as part of their Scorched Earth project to raise funds for refugees.

The original painting was created with paint that Migrate Art manufactured using ash from the burnt crop fields of Northern Iraq. Atelier JI created this relief print for Jules de Balincourt and Migrate Art.
