Roger Hiorns

British artist Roger Hiorns (b. 1975, Birmingham) investigates material and form in the broadest sense. Strong opposites coexist, generating a tension between creation and collapse, the permanent and the ephemeral, the organic and the mechanic through processes in which he himself has often no influence on the eventual appearance of the work. The story of these blue crystals began with his installation 'Seizure', in 2008. He filled an apartment in London ready for demolition, with a copper sulphate solution, which through chemical process resulted in an interior fully covered with gleaming blue crystal formations.

Atelier JI collaborated with Vital Arts Barts Health Trust in 2023 to bring an extension of Hiorn’s installation at the Royal London Hospital to life in the ‘Fielden House’ edition to support Doorstep London and the Vital Arts programme.
