Sidney Nolan

Sir Sidney Robert Nolan (1917 – 1992) was one of Australia's leading artists of the 20th century. Working in a wide variety of mediums, his oeuvre is among the most diverse and prolific in all of modern art. He is best known for his series of paintings on legends from Australian history, most famously Ned Kelly, the bushranger and outlaw. Nolan's stylised depiction of Kelly's armour has become an icon of Australian art.

Kelly is made from a plate that is one of a small number Nolan made whilst working at Atelier 17 in 1958, with the influential English printmaker and teacher Stanley William Hayter. The plate was proofed by Nolan but no edition was ever made until now.

The print was proofed by Prof. David Ferry RE, using Arthur Boyd’s etching press which is owned by the Trust. The edition has been printed by Peter Bennett, Master Printmaker - Atelier JI, London, using Nolan’s original paper stock.
