Odili Donald Odita

Odili Donald Odita (b. 1966, Engu, Nigeria) is an abstract artist whose practice is concerned with the power and dynamics of colour. His work incorporates geometric patterns and vibrant hues, often on a large-scale, which he realises through painting, wall installations and now printmaking. Odita views colour as an active agent within his work, with the potential to mirror personal experience as well as broader historical and political turning points.

Atelier JI’s first project with Odita and Cristea Roberts Gallery, ‘Firewall’, a series of 4 screenprints, and his first major project at such a scale in silkscreen debuted at Art Basel Miami Beach 2023.

Installations

The ‘Firewall’ series debuted at Cristea Roberts Gallery’s booth at Art Basel Miami Beach 2023.

“Achieving the same ambition of colour and complexity as the artist’s paintings, the set of four works which comprise Firewall is the artist’s first major project at this scale in silkscreen and his first collaboration with Cristea Roberts Gallery.”

A behind-the-scenes look at the production of ‘Firewall’ at the Atelier JI studios.

“Exploring colour both in the figurative historical context and in the sociopolitical sense, Odita’s art is also rooted in his deep knowledge of both modernist hard-edge abstraction and West African textiles.”
