‘The poet must get his weeping done with’, 2024 alongside development sketches Hale’s studio

Phil Hale (b. 1963, Boston, MA) is an American figurative painter working in London known for his characteristically intense paintings and portraits. Some of the most important themes and styles that he has explored in the course of his decades-long career convey devastation, impending doom, movement, complexity and distress. (N.I., 2016)

Atelier JI collaborated with Hale and First Thursday to produce the ‘ENEMY’ limited edition print in 2024.

“This painting was part of a set done in 2017 for the ENEMY show in London. And (as in most of my shows) all of the individual paintings have the same name as the show itself, as they fundamentally form a full composite project, not a series of individual pieces. So this piece is... Enemy. It’s one of my favourites from the series – this one, as the cliche goes, painted itself.”
