Rana Begum (b. 1977, Bangladesh) works with industrial materials, such as stainless steel, aluminium, copper, brass, glass and wood to make sculptures and reliefs that explore geometry, colour and light. Light reflects and absorbs on fluorescent coloured surfaces to create changing sensations as viewers move in and around her works and the space they occupy. She is inspired by urban architecture and her childhood memories of the geometric patterns of traditional Islamic art and architecture.

Atelier JI collaborated with Begum and Cristea Roberts Gallery to produce the screenprinted editions ‘No. 924 Mesh’ and ‘No. 925 Mesh’ in preparation for ‘The Interaction of Colour’ exhibition at Cristea Roberts Gallery in 2019.

‘No. 924 Mesh’ and ‘No. 925 Mesh’ were also featured in ‘Sensing Abstraction’, an exhibition of works on paper by five female abstract artists, each of whose practice revolves around varying approaches to abstraction.

‘Sensing Abstraction’ was on display at Cristea Roberts Gallery from the 10th of March - 22nd of April, 2023.
