New Publication: Remi Rough, ‘Watching my name go by’
Remi Rough has returned to the Atelier JI studios to produce the striking ‘Watching my name go by’ screenprinted edition, including fourteen unique monoprints.
The artwork is the first of Rough’s latest paintings from his new compartmentalised painting series, which feature multiple paintings within the canvas. Complex yet seamless, his signature clean lines and precise use of colour have been meticulously interpreted by our printmakers into screenprint.
“We tried to be as fluid as possible whilst making the unique prints. I didn’t want the monoprints to follow any format so the process was completely organic”
It was a pleasure to have Remi back in the studio to collaborate with our printmakers to make some more unique prints. As our first screenprinting collaboration, working in a new printmaking medium has allowed us to build upon the foundations we established in 2021 whilst creating the ‘Style Writer Extraordinaire’ monotypes.
“We tried to be as fluid as possible whilst making the unique prints. I didn’t want the monoprints to follow any format so the process was completely organic, using the exact same method to how I paint, but in reverse. As opposed to masking off negative areas, the tape became the positive parts of the image.
I couldn’t visualise how each one would finally look; I just had to trust the process and keep experimenting. There’s something so joyful about printmaking and working with an amazing publisher and team of printmakers who helped me achieve something utterly fabulous.”
