‘Counterpoint’ at Cristea Roberts Gallery
Odili Donald Odita’s ‘Firewall’ series is currently on display as part of ‘Counterpoint’, Cristea Roberts Gallery’s first exhibition of 2024.

‘Counterpoint’ explores seventy years of abstract art through works created as a series, taking its title from the art of writing two or more lines of a musical composition that are to be played at the same time. Much like the polyphonic harmony of a counterpoint, works created in a series contribute to the structure of the whole through both their underlying similarities and their unique rhythms and melodies.

The exhibition marks the first time Odita’s ‘Firewall’, 2023, produced by Atelier JI, has been exhibited in the UK. The series is featured alongside prints by Rana Begum and Ian Davenport as well as pioneers of the movement, including Josef Albers and Bridget Riley.
“The works on show in this expansive exhibition constitute masterclasses in technical printing. All of the artists, be they past or present, demonstrate how seemingly simple formulas can be used to generate complex groups of artworks and that articulating abstraction through series has evolved into a universal language that can engage any viewer.
Four new prints by Odili Donald Odita (b. 1966), the artist’s first major project at this scale in screenprint will be exhibited for the first time in the UK. Featuring geometric patterns and vibrant hues, Firewall, 2023, are characteristic of a practice which is concerned with the power and dynamics of colour.”
